Hey guys! Where are my fellow OP fans at? :)

What are your favorite and least favorite arcs?

I'm actually currently re-reading the series and I'm at Thriller Bark so my thoughts on this may change as I see everything again... but as of now it's like this:

Top favorite:
Marineford
Water7/Enies Lobby
Dressrosa
Skypiea
Alabasta
Impel Down

Top least favorite:
Axe-Hand Morgan
Davy Back
Reverse Mountain/Laboon

(still like these arcs, just nothing compared to when One Piece gets real)

So what about you guys? What are your favorite and least favorite OP arcs? You can list however many you wish! :D

I wish they understood more how impressive a feat it is that the quality of the artwork and storytelling has been so consistent for 20 plus years even though Oda has been working on it day in and day out and has literally been hospitalized from this. It's almost impossible to do what Oda has done almost no other manga can do this I seriously don't understand how his body hasn't failed him at this point lol

@chronicplane: Nice list!! :D Just to warn you... Dressrosa is actually the mot divisive arc in OP imo. Most everyone agrees the beginning and ending were really good but a lot of people think it's just too long..... which is easy to understand lol it's like the longest OP arc and that's saying a lot, but it's filled with some of the best One Piece moments imo but don't let me over-hype it for you. Find out for yourself and tell me what you thought of it afterwards!! ^_^

3 Favorite:

Alabasta- This is what got me hooked onto One Piece, and honestly it's better to watch it because the Straw Hats were unknown to the vast majority of the world. Had some of the best fights too.

Enies Lobby- Damn, another arc with some of the best fights. The hype was real, and the feels were real too. I'll always Luffy getting up after Lucci's Rukogan, and started pounding him with Gatling Gun while screaming at the top of his lungs. Then that badass OST plays and Lucci gets defeated with everyone there (Marines and Straw Hats) look in absolute awe. One of the best moments in One Piece for sure.

Marine ford- This needs no explanation.

3 Least Favorite is:

Fishman Island, Thriller Bark, and Skypeia....just too boring imo.

@piratekingoda: Dressrosa was so long in the anime and I hated that. I didn't understand why they couldn't just stop the series for a little bit, then return back to the action with good pacing. That or just take the Naruto/Bleach route and do massive amounts of filler in between the arcs.

@piratekingoda: No worries about tagging me. I've been an OP fan for over a decade now. Back then, I felt I was the only one since everyone was all about DBZ and "OG" Naruto. Like a lot of folks in the West, my introduction to One Piece was via the infamous 4Kids production. Even though it was gawd-awful, I liked the art style and the humor enough to keep tuning in. Eventually, I found fansubs of the anime (Kaizoku first & Yibis later on) and pretty much marathoned the first 400+ episodes. Reading the manga became easier once I got a tablet five years ago. I am not up to date with either the anime or the manga as I tend to binge watch/read when I have time.

My favorite arc is easily Water7 / Ennis Lobby. It's the one that made me tear up and fall for Robin (so to speak). It was a pretty emotional arc and it helped define her especially following the conclusion to Alabasta.

After that we go back to East Blue for the Arlong Park arc. Like Ennis Lobby it was pretty emotional and it gave greater depth to Nami's character. Plus, I think it really united all of them as "nakama".

Next is Thriller Bark. I like Brook's sense of humor and Perona is my favorite non-Strawhat, so this one is high on my list. Another bonus for this arc is how Ussop shined as the hero. The conclusion was convenient, but I'm okay with it and I like how Bartholomew Puma appeared at the end when everyone was beyond spent, and how he gave Zoro Luffy's burdon.

Finally Return to Seabody and the Fishman Island arcs round out my list. These are the first adventure following the time skip and we got to see everyone's new form and powers. The Fishman Island arcs also has my favorite Luffy line ever where he defines what it means to be a hero. Zoro shares the same viewpoint which makes them good teammates.

I am really digging Whole Cake Island right now, but I can't include it since I haven't finished it yet. Also, as far as the anime goes, a special nod to filler arcs G-8 and Marine Rookie. I really like the episodes where the Strawhats try to pass themselves off as Navy sailors.

While I don't outright dislike any of the arcs, there are a few I would skip large chunks of when rewatching/re-reading. For the most part it's because I feel these arcs drag on too long even in the manga. I get that sometimes they need to slow down the story progress in the anime so it doesn't outpace the manga, but since I tend to watch these 50 to 100 episodes at a time that wears on my enjoyment. Even when I read the manga, I read straight through the end of an arc, so parts that seem to drag the overall pacing down irritate me.

Having said this, my least favorite arcs are Marineford and Dressrosa. While I like Impel Down because it's mostly crazy fun, Marineford seems to go on and on. Even though I understand the reason it had to be, the exclusion of the rest of the Strawhats emphasized the length of these arcs. I wanted the team to get back together and I had to work my way through all of these episodes/chapters to get there. I think Dressrosa might be even longer, and honestly, I don't care for Donquixote Doflamingo. Corrida Colosseum parts and the Tontatta Tribe were enjoyable, but the final fights involving all the various pirate crews, Doflamingo Pirates and Navy went on excessively.

On a side note, I wish they would do more of the alternate reality stories in the anime like Boss Luffy, the specials and shorts.

Loading Video...

Actually, it's kind of catchy.

This right here haha I love how One Piece has the most climactic finishers to their fights like Luffy breaking through the bedrock and splitting apart those buildings against Crocodile... finally reaching Enel on top of the clouds and cracking the bell, being soaked in blood and giving the last ounce of his strength for one last epic Gatling (literally, like he couldn't move after this lol) and last but not least 3 words: King Kong Gun... and I haven't even mentioned all of them yet.

But I honestly found Skypiea engaging for two reasons, one was cause I was just so interested in the island itself it is by far one of... if not my favorite island in One Piece, and reason two of course is Enel. I found his whole "survival game" to be very engaging and just his entire character was so amazing for me I felt as though he carried this arc I absolutely love everything about Enel he's one of my fav OP villains and I want him to return so badly hahaha xD I just find him to be such a better villain than most the later ones we got; Moriah, Hody, Caesar, etc...

The other arcs are the same for me too, I just love the islands and how different and varied they are, as well as certain characters that held them up for me; like Brook in Thriller Bark and Jinbe in Fishman Island.

And you're definitely right about Dressrosa haha I'm so glad I read it first because whenever I go to watch it I just can't stand it XD Except for the final fight.

@Penguin-Dust: HAHAHA I so remember that back in the day!!!! Unfortunately I wasn't like you and I'm actually one of the people that got turned off by One Piece at first because of that dub LOL and it wouldn't be until way later that I checked out the Funimation dub/subs and then the manga. For how much I love OP now, I regret not giving it a chance back in the day like you did haha but idk everything about the show just seemed so weird to me at the time and that dub certainly did not do it any favors! xD

It's actually so funny how tastes change... back in the day when I watched OP and I saw that dub.... I couldn't help but think to myself this series was just so childish lol like "Gum Gum fruit"? The phrase "king of the pirates" .....and just the art style used to be was way too cartoony and childish for me even though I myself was a child at the time lol but I grew up on DBZ so I guess I was just more into a serious type of feel. And OP just kinda seemed like an even lamer Dragon Ball (original) to me haha..... fast forward to now of course and it's my favorite series of all time basically lmao......

I find the expressive art style to be MUCH better when reading as opposed to watching because the animation most of the time doesn't do it justice. Whereas in the manga the over exaggerated facial expressions and personalities just jump off the page and help make it such a pleasure to read. The artwork isn't "technically" superior to a lot of other manga out there, but it's that execution in how the feelings and emotions are portrayed that help give OP that "energy"........Idk how to explain it but I know people know what I'm talking about lol... the characters have such unique and fun personalities and are always either having fun or are excited about something or are so hyped to be going on an adventure or even when just hanging out together the artwork makes OP just such a blast to read. The only way I can describe it is that it feels like you're just another Strawhat going on an adventure with these guys as they grow to become one of the greatest "families" in manga or even in all of fiction.

And thank you so much for the great post!!! :D Wow I'm impressed you really are an OG One Piece Fan!!!! Hahaha and I'm surprised you don't like a lot of things about it though like Marineford and Doflamingo lol x3

Favorite: Alabasta. Good stakes, emotional investment, solid villains, overall a great arc.

Least: Enies Lobby or Long Ring, Lond Land [Davy/Fox]. Enies is more on me then the show, Enies Lobby was a fun arc and Robin is easily my favorite character among the crew, I liked her before when she was a 'villain' in the Alabasta arc as I love her powers which are very creative and I love her design. However, I am just really tired of that same bloody arc in nearly every shonen, "Oh noes! Our friend has been kidnapped! They have multiple baddies! Lets split off one by one and have a series of duels as we make our way up the dark tower, castle, forest, wheel in the sky!" So tired of it. Loved it in Yu Yu Hakasho which is the first time I saw it [IIRC, think it is what started this], liked it in Naruto's Sasuke Retrieval Mission, enjoyed it in D.Gray-Man's Noah's Ark... Was solid in Bleach's Soul Society Arc..... Got annoyed with it in Arrancar Arc which happened... right... after... like... Jesus, then it appears in other manga and.. I just.. so tired of it. So when I saw it, again, in One Piece.. I was just:

No Caption Provided

I understand why others like it, as it is a solid arc, all things considered, but I am just done with that shonen cliche. So, as I said, its on me.

Davy/Fox is self-explanatory.

Favorites

  • Sky Island/ Skypiea

  • Enies Lobby

  • Marineford

Worst

  • Foxy/ Davy Back

  • Thriller Bark ( now this arc had some very memorable moments, but I disliked the fight against Oars. It felt like Oda ran out of ideas and randomly created nightmare Luffy, what was kinda lame )

  • Amazon Lily

You should've done top 5 man, it was hard to create the top 3 favorites.I really liked Arlong Park and Alabasta too. It took me like 30 minutes to think about my top 3 haha.

Hehe, well I'm just thankful that someone is doing OP threads here. One Piece is such a masterpiece and sadly many people don't understand it.Many get distracted by the goofy character designs and weird stuff, but the work and research Oda has put into this, is huge.Ofcourse you can tag me in OP threads and also Marvel/DC threads any time.

@mindleech: Oh awesome thank you so much!! :D Yeah actually I noticed people on this site seriously hate One Piece....

And thanks again for letting me tag you on threads it means a lot! :) I have made a bunch idk if you've seen if you're interested in checking out any haha ^^

And thanks again for letting me tag you on threads it means a lot! :) I have made a bunch idk if you've seen if you're interested in checking out any haha ^^

And thanks again for letting me tag you on threads it means a lot! :) I have made a bunch idk if you've seen if you're interested in checking out any haha ^^

I'm actually currently re-reading the series and I'm at Thriller Bark so my thoughts on this may change as I see everything again... but as of now it's like this:

Top favorite:
Marineford
Water7/Enies Lobby
Dressrosa

And thanks again for letting me tag you on threads it means a lot! :) I have made a bunch idk if you've seen if you're interested in checking out any haha ^^

@mindleech: Hahahaha actually you're so right and tbh now that I think about it I don't even know my top 5 lol because I can't choose between Alabasta and Impel Down XD Sorry haha I didn't necessarily just mean top 3 for everyone that's just what I did but anyone else can do what they want! :D I'd love for someone to rank all the arcs in their fav order but that's probably way too impossible lmao here I'll edit my post a bit so it's a bit more clear x3

And thanks again for letting me tag you on threads it means a lot! :) I have made a bunch idk if you've seen if you're interested in checking out any haha ^^

These would be my personal picks.

Favorites:

  • Alabasta

  • Water-7 / Ennies Lobby

  • Impel Down

  • Marineford

  • Drum Island

Least Favorites:

  • Reverse Mountain

  • Davy Back

I haven't caught up with Post Timeskip yet so I'll withold full judgement, Currently still at Fishman Island Arc though If I do Dressrosa is probably going to be on my fav's.

Actually, it's kind of catchy.

Don't make me choose, i have special love for every arch, since every each of them has their memorable moment. I'm currently at Fishman Island, and it's already been having pretty good moments.

Marineford and Albasta for the best.

The recent whole run with Big Mom made me drop the manga as a whole and I haven't been able to pick it back up.
