War Machine takes the place of the Avengers in the Battle of New York. While he doesn't have allies fighting alongside him, he can be given instructions by Avengers while he fights.

He must successfully stop the Chitauri invasion.

War Machine has infinite ammo and the rate of attack for all weapons stays the same.

They still eventually overwhelm him and he cant take out multiple leviathans

I don't see him doing it. He can't take out the Leviathans, and he can't be everywhere at once stopping the Chitauri.

He runs out of ammo and dies

If the Chitauri could tag Iron Man and ground him, I don't see how James is going to survive.

Obviously, he's not enough to stop the invasion alone.

It's implied that even the Avengers would have been overwhelmed by the Chitauri and that's why they made closing the portal a priority.

Poor Rhodey

@juiceboks: the Chitauri were only tagging Mark 7 Iron Man, who as far as we know only has the standard Iron Man suit speed of under Mach 5. Rhodey’s Infinity War suit was made at least after Civil War and every suit (except Hulkbuster) since the Mark 42 has been made with a more flexible design to enable Mach 5 or higher movement. Based on stuff like the thruster increasers, a fair few have even argued that Tony’s newest suit is reaching closer to Mach 10 now. Also Rhodey’s suit in Infinity War was shown effortlessly outspeeding what Falcon was able to fly at while Falcon was able to rapidly gain on Rhodey’s Civil War suit. They might still be able to tag Rhodey if he’s not careful, but if he plays it like he played the Outriders, he’ll wipe out the normal troops in no time. The Leviathans are another argument though, he’d have to try to replicate what Tony did multiple times.

If he finds Loki's chariot right off the bat and takes the scepter he'd stop them before anything major but he dies in a shootout alone even with infinite ammo unless the military or SHIELD are allowed to meaningfully intervene

He loses but he takes a whole lot of them with him.

He can do it if he gets the nuke...and knows about the spaceship...

He can't put down Leviathans.

He could do it, but there would be a lot more death and destruction before it ends than in avengers. Let's not forget the Avengers won by closing the portal leading to the death of all the chituaris and leviathan at once.

@payneintheass: they can give him instructions so he makes the best choices to stop the invasion. The Avengers had no idea how to stop it initially, so all of them were needed to hold off the first waves. War Machine definitely can copy Iron Man's nuke feat.

Can War Machine pull it off with advice? Maybe, maybe not, which is why I made this thread. WM would be the weakest Avenger with the chance to solo imo, but can he actually pull it off?

I really don't see how Rhodey has a chance.

He fails this quite bad.
