Setting Action Method Parameter value outside of its form tag scope

0

Apologies if this is worded badly, I am new to ASP.NET Core...

I am currently attempting to set an Action Method parameter (columnHeader) from within a different Action Method tag.

View Page:

<form asp-controller="BomItems" asp-action="EditMultiple">

//...

<button asp-controller="BomItems" asp-action="FilterColumn" asp-route-columnHeader="ProjectRef" data-toggle="modal" data-target="#filterModalString" class="btn"></button>

//...

<button asp-controller="BomItems" asp-action="FilterColumn" asp-route-columnHeader="Description" data-toggle="modal" data-target="#filterModalString" class="btn"></button>

//...

</form>

<form asp-controller="BomItems" asp-action="FilterColumn">
<div id="filterModalString" class="modal fade" role="dialog">
<div class="modal-dialog">
//...

<input type="submit" class="btn btn-success" value="FILTER" />
</div>
</div>
</form>

BomItemsController:

public async Task<IActionResult> FilterColumn(string columnHeader)

//...

switch(columnHeader)

case "ProjectRef":

//...

break;
case "Description":

//...

break;

The functionality I want to produce is when one of the above buttons is clicked the Action Method "FilterColumn" has its parameter "columnHeader" populated by the appropriate string ("ProjectRef" or "Description") which also produces a modal popup where the Action Method gets executed. Although I am assuming this isn't working because I have tried to set this from inside the "EditMultiple" form tag instead of setting it inside the "FilterColumn" form tag.

Note: The EditMultiple Action Method does something completely different to FilterColumn and the form tags must remain in this structure.

Please let me know anything that needs clarifying.
