Neh, I empathize with villains like MCU Killmonger and Vulture who had good reasons to be who they are and understandable motives but you can't sympathize with how they try to to attain said motivations.

Actions over backstories and end motivations make characters. Not the other way around. End motivations can end up being so-so but how a villain tries to go after that motivation is what matters. What makes a villain great is often just them simply being great at being bad people. Taking action is the spice of a character. I mean take a look at Frieza and The Dark Knight's Joker. They're clearly not sympathetic for most people but people remember them because of what they did on screen.

You have a great motivation and backstory but barely do anything memorable in the story? You're just a boring loser and a crybaby. An afterthought is what you are.

Villains can leave a long lasting impression but at the end of the day, they're villains. You shouldn't root for them.

That depends on how you define a villain and how the story is constructed. In watchmen, Ozzy is the clear main antagonist yet his atrocious actions are a result of noble intentions.

In Berserk, guts is a vengeful maniac that slaughters anything his path, yet his progress and reasons for doing so are understandable, whereas Griffith, despite building a utopia, is an egotistical monstrous rapist.

I remember routing for Sandman in Spiderman 2 as a kid. I think when the villains are written well they're easy to sympathize with. When they're easy to sympathize with, sure sometimes I'll hope that the villain comes out successful.

I wanted the villains to end in Transformers 2-5 so we wouldn't get a sequel.

I remember routing for Sandman in Spiderman 2 as a kid. I think when the villains are written well they're easy to sympathize with. When they're easy to sympathize with, sure sometimes I'll hope that the villain comes out successful.

All the time. In most cases, the villain is actually correct, but the hero always wins to inforce what the general audience considers as "right".

Of course. Ra's is prolly one of the most notable examples. Bane and Zod usually make me root for them as well.
