I recently Googled the birth rate in the United States per year and the result was slightly fewer than 4 million babies are born per year.

In my opinion, childbirth should be free for the citizens and paid for by the government and here's why:

At average, 4 million Americans are born per year, that equals to 4 million future taxpayers, 4 million workers, 4 million future builders, so for the government to fund childbirth is an investment to future citizens.

@ardouronerous:

No, I disagree.

the child birth rate has actually went down in the US due to people focusing on their careers and abortion. There is a service being provided for the birth which healthcare should cover a large percentage. Sometimes they do not. My son was premature and I did have to fork over some money. My son was premature and his bill before insurance was 70,000 dollars. My insurance covered all but 15%. Even if complications is a small amount of the majority of births, you would have to see the standard bill that people receive. Its a few thousands of dollars before insurance starts deducting costs. If you place 4 million babies and place the cost of around 5,000 per child then that would mean that you want to add 20 billion dollars to the government costs - which the government gets from taxes. Do you want to raise your taxes?

I would say the 'future investment' should not lie in the kid being born, it should lie in getting the kid ready to take a proper job, which means investing in the kids welfare, it's school and education gearing it towards a job market where it's needed.

@ardouronerous:

Child birth is free of charge. You can have a child at home if you want. Medical attention at a hospital is not free though.
