Story - probably WRPG but JRPG have their moments, personally i think its a tie.
Gameplay - WRPG gameplay are more fitting to be called RPG though JRPG gameplays are very fun in their own gamey way.

I prefer wrpgs because I like making the decisions. In most jrpg its less 'roleplaying' and more 'sit back and watch the story unfold regardless of how you may feel about what is happening'.

JRPGs absolutely shit stomp when it comes to story, Persona series + Chrono Trigger + Final Fantasy 9 i mean its not even close.
Gameplays are more subjective and i find myself wavering from either side... but i will probably favor JRPGs once again

I think JRPG has the better narrative which is a consequence of having a very focus and linear story.
While you could probably make an Academy award winning movie out of it, in the end you are still just a spectator.
The story of WRPG however (at least the one mentions above) excels on the situational interactive dialogues, the freedom to explore different situation and branching pathways.
It makes the story more personal and more relatable. WRPG stories are essentially the gamers own story as you interact with game.
So the merit of WRPG story is its potential and the freedom that it allows.

I have a strong preference for WRPGs. JRPGs have better tools for telling a solid, linear story as you're usually playing a pre-set character with pre-defined goals, which is a massive advantage. At the same time though, WRPGs are more about choices and allowing the player to effect how the story goes forward, which is something done best when the player can make their own character with it's own personality.
In terms of gameplay I greatly prefer WRPG. I like character creation and designing my own class and abilities.
