@jonny_anonymous: Goodnight Mommy and Witch were awful horror films. They're suspense films, with a couple scenes meant to shock the audience, marketed as horror films.

@inferiorego: Having tension instead of jump scares doesn't make it any less of a horror film. Also your opinions seem to be in the minority on those movies.

Art is subjective. Listen to the rest of the podcast and I actually mention good things about The Witch.

As for that comment, thanks for just dismissing me instead of discussing.

I think The Witch and Goodnight Mommy are two of the best horror films in decades. The atmosphere alone that those two movies create is something that you can almost feel sitting next to you. There is such a palpable unease during those movies that I genuinely felt a tightness in my stomach, and that is something that modern "horror" films have forgotten how to do.

IMO, in order for a horror movie to work, the setting has to be the main character. You can have a scary looking monster, a bunch of jump scares, and sharp chords to accompany them, but it's all just nonsense if you can't FEEL it. To me, horror is all about tension, anticipation, and unease, it's rarely about the actual scare.

@inferiorego: This is a discussion that has popped up A LOT recently and I think your stance isn't rare on those movies not being "horror" but I think you and a lot of people are misguided. Horror is a lot of things and to say something isn't horror is being a little too restrictive. It doesn't meet your definition of what that is but it definitely meets my definition. Horror is my favorite genre and I get pretty twitchy when I see people dismissing movies from the genre because they take a different approach to it.

Since nobody seemed to catch this detail, I'll just mention that in Legends of Tomorrow the other Time Masters had different AI on their ships. I think they were named

1) during the flashback when they're using the simulator

2) on the ship overrun by the pirates.

I can't remember if these two instances were the same AI or different ones but they definitely weren't called Gideon and they had masculine voices.

Gary was the computer in the training simulator and Gilbert on the Akeron. Maybe they can personalize it like Siri? Doesn't explain why Reverse Flash and Rip Hunter have the same computer name though.

Did you catch the Kanjar Ro and Imperiex name drop? Hard to tell if those were real things in that universe or just names that Rip made up to trigger Gideon.

I wouldn't mind seeing a ten minute Punisher origin on DD Season 2 but they could easily work their way around it. Punisher and Daredevil are fighting, DD says "Who are you and why are you doing this". The Punisher reply's "I'm Frank Castle, Google it" and then punches DD in the face and takes off.

List of great horror movies that have come out recently:

It Follows

Goodnight Mommy

The Witch

What We Do in the Shadows

Bone Tomahawk

We Are Still Here

Starry Eyes

The Babadook

Cabin in the Woods

The Taking of Deborah Logan

Evil Dead (2013 in terms of recent, but they're all great of course)

The Conjuring

You're Next

The House of the Devil

Kill List

The Innkeepers

The Loved Ones

ABCs of Death 2

V/H/S & V/H/S 2

The Den

In Fear

Resolution

Banshee Chapter

The Canal

Creep (2015)

Spring

Cropsey

The Nightmare

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

Nowadays it's rare for great horror movies to hit theaters, we get movies like It Follows & The Witch in theaters & audiences prefer to see Paranormal Activity 17 or Gods of Egypt. Horror lives on in indie & VOD, the great ones are out there! Just have to look a little harder

Horror is a lot of things and to say something isn't horror is being a little too restrictive. It doesn't meet your definition of what that is but it definitely meets my definition. Horror is my favorite genre and I get pretty twitchy when I see people dismissing movies from the genre because they take a different approach to it.

List of great horror movies that have come out recently:

It Follows

Goodnight Mommy

The Witch

What We Do in the Shadows

Bone Tomahawk

We Are Still Here

Starry Eyes

The Babadook

Cabin in the Woods

The Taking of Deborah Logan

Evil Dead (2013 in terms of recent, but they're all great of course)

The Conjuring

You're Next

The House of the Devil

Kill List

The Innkeepers

The Loved Ones

ABCs of Death 2

V/H/S & V/H/S 2

The Den

In Fear

Resolution

Banshee Chapter

The Canal

Creep (2015)

Spring

Cropsey

The Nightmare

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

Nowadays it's rare for great horror movies to hit theaters, we get movies like It Follows & The Witch in theaters & audiences prefer to see Paranormal Activity 17 or Gods of Egypt. Horror lives on in indie & VOD, the great ones are out there! Just have to look a little harder

@wardishy_: I thought I mentioned the other ship had a different voice. Or maybe I was going to but Mat or Corey started talking about something.
