My Tens - Top Ten Underrated Black Heroes
I understand that comics started off in a less than pleasant time for this country. However since then when comic companies have made changes they've done so very lightly or scared of backlash and have therefore left ideas on the table (Ultimate Captain America being black) or left extremely powerful , interesting and versatile characters in obscurity usually (Icon, Blue Marvel), Here are a few that need to be brought to the fore front... And don't worry this isn't the only underrated list.
List items
1. Icon
Augustus Freeman the IV considered to be the original "black" Superman. Stranded in 1839 Icon has live in and fought in every period of America and every war that America has waged. Taking in a teenage girl to mentor and as a sidekick and protege. Icon is capable of damaging Superman and has a host of powers he doesn't have.
2. Blue Marvel
Adam Brasher the Blue Bomber. Gifted intelligent powerful, ultimately shunned and asked to retire by the President. Adam has sadly been shunned by Marvel on most occasions. The creator stated he's able to easily match Thor, Superman etc. Not outclass to look silly but equal footing. You don't get treated to much of this yet. The closest is when he walked over Sentry and the Mighty Avengers team. With him being added to the New Ultimates team I'm looking for him to start making center stage.
3. Calvin Ellis
President Superman. Only seen briefly. This strange visitor became President of the US in his universe. While balancing his responsibilities. He has done some interesting things I'm surprised Prime Earth Superman never did. While he is currently getting utilized in Multiversity, I'm sad to say if that series ends we may not see him again. Also interesting is his take on the classic Superman suit.
4. Patriot
Grandson of the only survivor of the Captain America test subjects. Patriot is a good character that is very under utilized. And with the amount of respect and appreciation keeps being said Captain America has for his grand father you think there would be a unique dynamic here as he's tutored to become the next captain america. Probably not but it would be nice to see comic characters age and have replacements...
5. Hardware
A hero that's been around and been solely underrated and misused 50% of his recent appearances. Curtis Metcalf is able to hold his own against Batman and Ironman but gets less than half the credit for it.
6. Technique
The female version of Hardware? That's an understatement. Co-Worker and Protege of Curtis. Tiffany Evans made her debut by making her own armor and kicking Hardware butt in their initial meeting. Just as smart and equally dangerous she gets even less love than hardware these days and that's saying something.
7. Night Thrasher
Dwayne Taylor the original leader of the New Warriors. This character and the rest of his team are what originally drew me past X-Men into the rest of Marvel. A team more than capable of equaling the Teen Titans. The New Warriors suffered from bad writing, and bad art and Night Thrasher in the team book and in his own series suffered from it alot. A character that should have been closer to Batman's equal in the later years, would be killed off in a rookie mistake with most of the originals to kick off MArvel's civil war. This is one of the most tragic uses and waste of a character I've ever seen. Hoping for redemption for this character and the Warriors by Ext.
8. Nubia
The Black Wonder Woman. What alot of "fans" of this character and WW don't know is that originally they were sisters born side by side. Before she was made a alternate universe counterpart. Just as powerful and actually making headway in her mission for peace she's more obscure than the Superman she shares that reality with. A character I would love to see fleshed out more and treated with more respect.
9. Spectrum
Monica Rambeau. What can we say held the Captain Marvel title long before Carol Danvers. Was a long time and one of the best leaders the Avengers had. Has a host of energy based powers. And as of late gets seen maybe 1% more than Blue Marvel. She is also supposed to be in the new Ultimates book.... I'm still hoping she's shown at her best.
10. Rocket
Racquel Ervin the young woman that stands beside Icon. She's started at the bottom and has come a long way. Not backing down from anyone including Batman threatening to wrap his cowl around his neck if he didn't behave. She's powerful enough to hold her own against WW and hasn't reached full potential yet. Believed by many to be the one that will officially take Icon's place one day. She's probably the most underrated on this list being the youngest and a single mother. But she's not stopped her climb.
11. Static
Honorable Mention: Why? He's def underrated, but he's also gotten the most usage out of anyone on this list. So he's def popular. Being in several recent series as a main or the main character and even being in several episodes of Young Justice Virgil is still underrated but getting more love than the rest right now. But I still want to see better with the way this character is handled.
