Poll: Loose Magic or Detailed Magic: Which do you prefer? (38 votes)
Loose Magic 32%
Detailed Magic 68%
In fiction, most magic can be divided into either loose or detailed magic. I'm certain those aren't the correct terms, but I don't feel like looking them up.
Loose Magic; as what we will call it for the purpose of this thread, is magic with no set rules in place, or at the very least, the rules can be easily bendable for the sake of plot. Examples of this would be 'the force' in Star Wars, or magic seen throughout Game of Thrones. You have a vague idea on how it works, but there is still a lot of mystery surrounding it. It also helps characters pull off seemingly impossible stuff for the sake of plot.
Detailed Magic would be something like the rules of magic in Harry Potter, or the laws of alchemy in Fullmetal Alchemist, or ninjutsu in Naruto. While there are still a bit of mystery surrounding these magical systems, the author lays it out pretty well how these systems work, and what characters can and can't do with them. Edward Elric isn't just going to start doing flame alchemy out of the blue because there are set reasons why he can't.
One offers more structure while the other leaves room to the imagination. Which do you prefer?

Hard Magic
Verbal, Somatic, and Component elements, along with limited castings of spells over time make magic more interesting. It becomes a science of the otherworldly.

Always detailed. Loose magic basically leads to characters pulling tricks out of their asses. There should always be some sort of rule and limitations to the magic.

Depends, but in general, loose. If it's too quantified, it can stop feeling like magic and sometimes feel a bit kiddie. I quite like ASOIAF where magic can barely be controlled by most and is like an elemental force.

Detailed Magic would be something like the rules of magic in Harry Potter, or the laws of alchemy in Fullmetal Alchemist, or ninjutsu in Naruto.

Loose if magic is merely a present element in the world of the story and not its main focus.
Otherwise, detailed.

Depends on the setting, but generally, both.
Blood and Chaos Magic in Marvel is an example of loose magic that is not detailed in the Book of Vishanti or follow a specific set of rules/system.

Loose. I think it evokes far more imagination, which is what a story should do.

Hard Magic
Verbal, Somatic, and Component elements, along with limited castings of spells over time make magic more interesting. It becomes a science of the otherworldly.

I'd vibe more toward detailed magic, but really, loose magic can really have it's moments.

Depends on the setting, but generally, both.
Blood and Chaos Magic in Marvel is an example of loose magic that is not detailed in the Book of Vishanti or follow a specific set of rules/system.

Detailed. I hate it when for the sake of the plot a character just pulls some trick out of their ass we'd never seen used before and saves everyone.

Loose if magic is merely a present element in the world of the story and not its main focus.
Otherwise, detailed.
