Let's say after the outburst Gregor had, Robert says something along the lines of "This is a tournament, settle it with a duel!"
Both are given their standard armor, battle is to the death.
Loras Tyrell did incredibly well against a fully armored Brienne of Tarth and was in second place out of over 100 combatants during Renly's tournament, so I'm really wondering who might win this fight, but I'm leaning towards the mountain.
This is not going to be even remotely one-sided though, as the events after the jousting were. Loras is a beast in combat, he was able to disarm Brienne. If it wasn't for that tackle, Brienne would've been done.
Who wins?

@the_magister: I picture it ending up similarly to Oberyn and The Mountain's fight.
I think they're near-equals, and Loras is gonna take some wins.

@phillip33: If he was able to compete for as long as he did against Brienne, and disarm her, he can most certainly take some wins from Gregor.

Gregor. By GRRM's word they are both among the best current fighters in Westeros, but that doesn't mean they are equals. Loras has one good feat of killing Emmon Cuy and Robar Royce as well as another soldier in a fit of uncontrollable rage though we haven't seen it happen ourselves so we don't know exactly what went on there. They might as well have been unarmed. Gregor on the other hand is far more well-established as a warrior. I don't think it's a fair match tbh, even when Loras offered to lead the hunt against Gregor in book 1, he was more or less mocked and told by everyone in the room that he should back off for his own good because Gregor would break him like a twig. In a joust, yeah sure Loras is great and can beat Gregor. In a swordfight he would get himself killed. He doesn't have the speed, the reach or the experience that Oberyn had. He can't even touch Gregor.

@the_red_viper: ...He was able to disarm Brienne of Tarth in a one-on-one duel.
You're giving the mountain way too much credit, he's hardly the best swordsman in game of thrones, I can think of at least a dozen people that are better then him in duels.
Brienne of Tarth is one imo, The Hound for sure, Jaime Lannister with both hands, Barristan Selmy EVEN in his old age, Arthur Dayne, probably current Jon Snow, maybe Qhorin Halfhand, Beric Dondarrion, Thoros of Myr, Daario Naharis, Bronn, hell, Syrio Forel might even manage it. This is even assuming that they are armed only with swords.
Not to be rude but you've always overestimated The Mountain, he's a good swordsman, but he's always always come off as clumsy, and this is us using purely show feats and accolades, book has no bearing here.
To me, I thought, personally, Oberyn absolutely stomped him hard, he was toying with him the entire fight. I think Oberyn could've taken him out in 10 seconds or less if he truly wanted to and wasn't trying to make him confess.

@inside: I was talking of books only. In the show, Loras should still lose. Yes he disarmed Brienne but she was not using her weapon of choice, she was using a flail which is a lot harder to use than an axe which Loras used. Axes require little to no technique compared to a sword. Loras isn't even comparable to the Red Viper who almost got killed by Gregor at least twice. Loras can't win this.

@inside: Brienne and Gregor are the same type of fighters. Big, imposing, and using their heavy armor and stature to their advantage. Gregor, in that sense, is superior to Brienne. Loras isn’t disarming Gregor, and he’s be lucky to scratch his armor.

@the_red_viper: True, I guess you could also say she'd improved through-out her time on the show, but I don't think it's as one-sided as you're making it and it definitely isn't a stomp. Loras Tyrell is a legitimate knight and he's one of the most skilled in single combat. Him being second place out of over 100 opponents and his showing against Brienne shouldn't be laughed at.

@inside: I completely disagree. I think Gregor is absolutely two or three tiers out of Brienns league in terms of strength while Brienne is only marginally more skilled. The dude is like 8 ft++ and wields a great sword in one hand. Basically beheading a sword in one swing is an amazing feat of strength.

Gregor, but it's certainly very close imo.
Oberyn, Loras, Gregor, and Sandor all hover around the elite tier. Not quite on Jaime/Dayne/Selmy level, but much better than most combatants.
Excellent thread.

@the_magister: I picture it ending up similarly to Oberyn and The Mountain's fight.
I think they're near-equals, and Loras is gonna take some wins.

The Mountain pretty comfortably. Loras was knocking Brienne about, he'll struggle to even move Gregor an inch. There's just nothing Loras can do against a fully armoured Gregor.

Who wins?

The Mountain pretty comfortably. Loras was knocking Brienne about, he'll struggle to even move Gregor an inch. There's just nothing Loras can do against a fully armoured Gregor.

Who wins?

Gregor, but it's certainly very close imo.
Oberyn, Loras, Gregor, and Sandor all hover around the elite tier. Not quite on Jaime/Dayne/Selmy level, but much better than most combatants.
Excellent thread.

Gregor splits him in half. Loras is good, better than a lot of people give him credit for, book and show, but he isn't winning this.

The Mountain pretty comfortably. Loras was knocking Brienne about, he'll struggle to even move Gregor an inch. There's just nothing Loras can do against a fully armoured Gregor.

@the_red_viper: I think the scene was meant to show that he shared parity in terms of skill with Brienne of Tarth in general.

@inside: It was Brienne's first appearance in the show. It was meant to hype her up, not the other way around.

Who wins?

Gregor, but it's certainly very close imo.
Oberyn, Loras, Gregor, and Sandor all hover around the elite tier. Not quite on Jaime/Dayne/Selmy level, but much better than most combatants.
Excellent thread.

@the_magister: I picture it ending up similarly to Oberyn and The Mountain's fight.
I think they're near-equals, and Loras is gonna take some wins.
