Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is often considered to be the greatest romance story of all time. Of the many adaptations of the story this one seems to receive the most hate. The movie was actually very accurate to the original story and the dialogue remained intact. It seens that a lot of the hate comes from odd artistic choices but this opens a few other questions.

Mainly because there have been a lot of somewhat controversial changes in recent film, tv, or video games from the source material. Often the decision is brushed off simply as "so what if person a is x in the book? Its just an artistic decision to make them y and if it doesn't change the story then what does it matter?"

Back to Romeo and Juliet, none of the changes had anything to do with the story. The story was actually very faithful to the original. So my question is: if it couldn't have been the stylistic changes then what went wrong?

The overacting, other than that I suppose it being set in the modern era rubbed people up the wrong way, I've seen people get triggered that they call their guns 'swords' but that's just petty criticism.
