it's based off cultural gender norms where a Man should stand strong in front of danger and protect the weak, which typically would be a woman (damsel in distress). The reason the OP asks if a man stands behind a woman is because it directly goes against what years of fairytales and hero stories have shown us.

It's been this way for so long that we've been subliminally taught to subconsciously think this is how things should always be, and any man who isn't like this is weak, and any woman who isn't like that is extraordinary, when in reality (just like you said) throughout history we've read about how powerful and tough women can be.
