Update submodules only when directory is empty
I have a makefile that depends on a submodule. I cannot change a build system that is using this code/makefile so I need to run git submodule ..
inside the makefile.
I am using a trick to update the submodule before including some dependency:
dummy_submodules := $(shell git submodule update --init --recursive)
include $(SOME_SDK)/Makefile.defines
However, I would like to avoid running this command if the submodule has been already initialized: i.e. git has been previously used to checkout something.
If there is no alternative bash would be acceptable, but obviously I would prefer a simple git option.
Is there an option in git that can be used to skip the submodule update if there is already something there?
bash git git-submodules
