Firebase Dynamic Links in ios Safari leaving junk tabs after app re-direction. (Doesn't happen with goo.gl)

0

I was previously using goo.gl to make QR Codes for tripadvisor listings for my clients. When using a goo.gl url on iOS, it would load the tripadvisor webpage on safari if the tripadvisor app wasn't installed, and if it was installed, it would launch.

Setting up dynamic links in Firebase, I can get the same action to be triggered as above, but it leaves junk tabs open in safari every time I scan the QR Code. Also, going back into safari results in the tab being reloaded again, triggering the tripadvisor app once again.

Is there something I'm doing wrong with the setup? The target URL is exactly the same, with the only difference being goo.gl and firebase url shorteners being used. The way my firebase project is setup, is "Open the deep link URL in a browser" for both iOS and android.

Please let me know if anyone has a solution for this! Thank you, in advance!

  • I did a little more digging, and found out that goo.gl redirects are 301 and firebase dynamic links are 302 redirects. I'm not sure if that explains the difference in behavior of the iOS Safari.
