After Effects multiple loops and animations in one layer

I'm trying to animate (loop) something in After Effects and would like to know the best and easiest way to achieve this.
The animation, which is simple, would change every now and then based on time. Currently I'm using loopOut(); which works as expected for the one loop. Let's say I want to run this first loop between 0 and 30 seconds, then switch to another one and run that from 30-40 seconds and then switch back to the first one. This switching would repeat a few times during my project.
Hope you got the idea I'm going after. Can this even be done with one layer or would I need two for both of the animations?
