Die American Philosophical Society wurde 1743 von Benjamin Franklin und John Bartram in Philadelphia gegründet. Durch Forschungsstipendien, die Herausgabe von Zeitschriften, die Unterhaltung einer umfangreichen Bibliothek und regelmäßige Treffen fördert diese philosophische Gesellschaft viele Disziplinen der Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften.


Zu den Mitgliedern gehören und gehörten u. a. George Washington, John Adams, Elizabeth Cary Agassiz, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Paine, Benjamin Rush, James Madison, John Marshall, Lewis Nicola sowie Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, Tadeusz Kościuszko, Barack Obama und Hermann Parzinger.[1]
