Spring shell in InteliJ IDEA doesn't work properly
I have a simple Spring Boot project with spring-shell
starter configured. But I have a problem with output when working in IntelliJ IDEA (version 2018.1)
Here is my application configuration. I have a bean declaration for PromptProvider
:
@Bean
public PromptProvider promptProvider()
return () -> new AttributedString("my-shell:>", AttributedStyle.DEFAULT.foreground(AttributedStyle.GREEN));
And I have a shell component with the shell method:
@ShellComponent
public class MathComponent
@ShellMethod("add two ints")
public int add(int a, int b)
return a + b;
First of all, my prompt is not displayed in the output. However, the input is read, but even then the output is not correct. Here is the inputs and outputs that I'm getting:
add 1 2 #input
3 #output
add 3 4 #input
ad7 #output
add 5 6 #input
ad 611 #output
When building the application and run it from the terminal, everything works fine. I have found this question CLI-Spring Shell in IntelliJ but the answer provided there does not work for me, adding -Djline.terminal=org.springframework.shell.core.IdeTerminal
as VM argument did not change anything.
I'm running this on MacOS High Sierra 10.13.6
.

There are several issues with spring shell in IDEA, e.g.: youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-199233. Please report separate request.
