Is it good practice to store blockchain data on an offchain database to facilitate rich queries?

Be it Ethereum/EOS/IOTA etc, is it good practice to store lets say smart contract data on an offchain database like SQL/NoSQL to further allow rich query capabilities ? Are'nt we introducing a single point of failure with this design ?

With my little experience, I would suggest not to store all the contract data in off-chain database but to only store data which has computational limitations within smart contract such as Array of information, DateTime operations, Identity management etc.,

If you want to query mainnet data and you don't want to manage the infra, you can use Google BigQuery cloud.google.com/blog/products/data-analytics/…. But if you prefer self-hosted solution, you can try looking at ETHQL here github.com/ConsenSys/ethql.

I'm afraid ETHQL only allows querying of blocks, transactions and accounts but not internal storage of smart contract
