How to specify different Bundler groups when running tests locally vs on CI build VM?

0

I want to exclude a particular gem, pry-byebug, when running tests on the VM that we use for CI builds because I get the following error:

Sorry, you can't use byebug without Readline. To solve this, you need to
rebuild Ruby with Readline support. If using Ubuntu, try `sudo apt-get
install libreadline-dev` and then reinstall your Ruby.

I don't have control over the pre-installed Ruby version on the VM, and I don't want to reinstall it on every build because it would add too much time to the build.

Is there a way to set up my Bundler groups so that I can exclude the pry-byebug gem when I run tests on the VM? I don't want to remove it from my :test group because I still want to use the gem when running tests locally.

Can I even specify which Bundler groups my tests should use, or is it just whatever group name matches the Rails environment name? I'll set up a new ci_test Rails environment if I have to, but I'd rather avoid it if possible.
